The Tolbooth Tavern

Over 200 years of Scottish Hospitality

The Tolbooth Tavern in Edinburgh is part of the original Canongate Tolbooth which was built in 1591. This medieval building was used to collect tolls from travellers entering the burgh at the Canongate. The ground floor became The Tolbooth Tavern in 1820.

  • The Tolbooth Tavern is a cosy traditional Scottish pub full of character and charm. It boasts a fantastic spot along the Royal Mile where the small exterior gives way to a spacious bar and mezzanine dining area.

  • We have fine Scottish ales, malt whiskies and gins for you to enjoy whilst our chefs serve up hearty home-cooked Scottish fayre using locally sourced produce; where better to slake your thirst and quell your hunger be you on the tourist trail or looking for a relaxing dinner experience.

  • Our house favourites include Cullen skink, Tolbooth burgers, freshly landed Scottish fish n chips and our Tolbooth steak and sausage pie.

  • The Tolbooth Tavern is centrally located on the Canongate towards the bottom of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. There is limited on-street parking and pay parking nearby. Waverley Train Station and the tram line are just a 10-minute walk away as well as an abundance of local visitor attractions.

  • If you want to embrace some of Edinburgh’s dark history and immerse yourself in a spooky atmosphere, The Tolbooth Tavern is a must visit whilst in town.

  • Capacity in the main restaurant is 44 covers with an additional 30 covers in the bar area.

Situated at most fabulous outdoor seating overlooking the stunning Loch, the perfect spot to enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine on a glorious sunny day.
